Awesome Sketchup modelling, Black Hawk

Today I'm featuring the work of fellow Cape Town 3D artist silver_shadow . He works mainly in Sketchup - software that I've been reluctant to use to model in, although I often work on Sketchup files that I receive from architects, taking the files into 3ds max, pimping them and rendering them out with V-Ray. However, I didn't realise how powerful Sketchup was until I saw silver_shadow's images. I think the results speak for themselves. From the sketchucation forums : Modelling time: 1 full month (if I add up the bits and pieces during the 2 months) File size: 32.9mb Rendering: tests took over a time of a week Render engines: Introduction page (fryrender – first renders I have done on this application) Assembly pages (sketchup v-ray) Final presentation images (Maxwell render – first renders I have done on this application) Plus you can download his awesome 3D models for free, here: link Thank You silver_shadow/Jacques! Black Hawk down also happens to be one of my fav...

Links to free 3D furniture models as supplied by manufacturers

There is a list of links for free 3D furniture models, as supplied by the official manufactures on designconnected: ( http://www.designconnected.com/en/catalog/manufacturers_3d_pages/official+Manufacturers+Free+3D+Models ) I've only had time to check out one of the links on that site, and that is for http://www.moroso.it/ They have incredible real- life products, and they also have free 3d models of most of their products. The files are available in .3ds file format (3D), .dxf format (2D) and archiCAD format (3D). I downloaded the .3ds file for a product called "Around the Roses" (It's a collection of tables, although only one version of the table is supplied). The geometry seems fine as you can see in this screen shot below: However there are no textures included, so you will have to do some research and sort those out yourself. Here is my V-Ray render of the finished product: (I did modify the mesh a little) All in all, a handy list of links to have

More free 3d cars

I found some more free 3d car models here (3ds max file format) They seem to be pretty good quality Here is a Mercedes S55 that I rendered out. I had to change quite a few of the materials to V-Ray materials, because the file comes with some standard 3ds max materials, but other than that the models are pretty good. There is also a Nissan 350Z, Audi Q7, Honda S2000 and a bunch of other stuff

Free 3d car models

Chrysler is giving away some 3d car models here The cars available are: CHRYSLER: 2008 Sebring Convertible Limited JEEP: 2007 Wrangler Rubicon 4x4 two-door DODGE: 2008 Viper Coupe SRT10 Each data set includes 3D geometry, reference materials (photos, charts, graphics, etc.) HDRI domes, and photographic backplates for each vehicle, sheesh! Very cool of them to give this stuff away! Be warned though, it's a lot of data, like a couple of Gigabytes worth! Also, most of the meshes are in Maya format, so you will need to convert them in something like Okino PolyTrans if you want to use them in Max. here is a screenshot of one of the cars - i'll post up a render when I have time...

Free 3D Spaceship models

You can get Free 3D spaceships from NASA here: click There are all kinds of things available - 3D model of the Space Shuttle, Apollo Lunar Lander, the International Space Station, Skylab and many more. (All man made stuff, mostly US, no Area 51 or alien ufo's though :p) They are in .3ds format and come with lowish-res textures. I had to tweak the textures and model bit, but they seem to work fine, as you can see in the quick rendering I did above. Not bad for a free model. There are also some planet and space textures available, like this texture map of Mars and this map of a control panel from the Space Shuttle flight deck A handy resource if you need to make some spacey stuff!

Free Tintin rocket model in 3D

Yes, that's right, for today I have a FREE 3D model in .max file format with the material and texture files included! Tintin was one of my favourite comic book heroes from my youth - I made this model a long time ago, it's based on the rocket in the 1954 book Explorers on the Moon . You can get the model here or here . It seems like Steven Spielberg is directing a new Tintin movie, set for release in 2010
